What is Maryland doing to adapt to the effects of climate change?
The Earth is always changing. These changes are happening because our air, water and land are all linked to the climate. Some changes are not noticeable, but here in Maryland there are measurable differences.
In the Chesapeake Bay, sea level rise is flooding coastal lands at twice the global average rate, threatening Coastal Bay communities and neighboring lands.
Dorchester and Somerset counties are predicted to lose 95 percent or more of their brackish marshes - the same wetlands that act as natural buffers for the state's coastal communities. By 2100, Maryland may see 60 percent of its coastal wetlands disappear.
To address these impacts, the Maryland Department of Natural Resources developed land conservation strategies to help ensure the long-term survival of coastal wetlands and protect people and property from coastal flooding.
A computer model is used to predict the potential impacts of sea level rise on coastal wetlands and animal habitats for all of Maryland's coastal counties and Baltimore City. DNR uses this data for land conservation targeting and project review.
